Istiqlal Masjid Jakarta[Indonesia] Jakarta's Istiqlal Mosque, the 4th largest Mosque in the world, can hold more than 1,00,000 worshipers at a time. Arab traders brought Islam to the region a thousand years ago. Today Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country. This extravagantly beautiful mosque sits on nine and a half hectares of land. Ironically, President Soekarnoto chose a Christian architect to design it. Construction lasted from 1961 to 1967, but its official opening did not occur until 1978. One of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia, Mesjid Istiqlal can accommodate more than 1,00,000 people and 1000 vehicles. It comprises five levels, and its walls, walkways and floors are almost entirely covered with marble from Tulungagung, East Java. Dress modestly, and remove shoes before entering. The latter is supported by twelve round columns and the prayer hall lined by rectangular piers carrying overhanging balconies on each of the four storeys. Staircases, placed on the corners of the building give access to all floors. Access into the hall is through an entrance building covered by a chutri-like dome 10m in diameter. The latter structure is directly connected to the arcades which run around the large courtyard. The alignment of the mosque's courtyard to the National Monument adds symbolic weight to the former's position and marks it as the National Mosque. Besides religious facilities, the mosque also provides for social and cultural activities that include: lectures, exhibitions, seminars, conferences, bazaars and programmes for women, youth and children.
